Interview
How did you come up with the name for your company?
My name is Evey, I figured it was the best fitting name since the line is
kinda just me doing my own thing. I use my name because my designs come from
me... I dont read fashion magazines, or trend forcasting books, or care what
the styles are in NY or Paris... I never watch the Oscars or follow what
celebrities are wearing-- but rather I do my own thing... I create things
that I think are awesome, and different, so that girls can be unique.
What are you inspired by?
Im inspired by the way girls dress in Japan. I admire the way they clash
colors and patterns and overly accessorize. They saturate themselves in
color and its just really neat to see people doing their own thing with
fashion. I was also really inspired by what I saw in Amsterdam, Spain, and
Germany when I went backpacking there a few years ago. I loved the bright
colored dread locks, and extensions, and the sort of punk rock chic way they
put themselves together.
Are you influenced by other companies?
Its hard to say no, because I do believe that people are influenced by
everything theyre exposed to... at least to a certain extent... however
there arent any lines out there that Im really inspired by or that I could
say have directly influenced me.
What is your lines target audience?
Girls ages 12 to mid twenties... who are cute but with an edge. Girls who
arent afraid to stand out in a crowd and have fun being themselves.
Does your line have a certain theme? or is it forever changing?
The basic theme of my line is individuality... I wont be offering a defined look for people to follow but more of a way for girls to express themselves in a unique way-- I do alot of custom orders... so that girls can take something they like from my line, but make it their own. I also will limit production runs so that not too many girls are wearing the same pieces from my line.
Why did you choose certain scenequeens to model for you?
Ive had so many awesome girls model for my line. Among them have been Zui
Suicide of Trashy Life, MayStar of Club Fashion Whore and Pop Noir, Betsy
Oslund, Channon Finley, Anita K, Lana Jade, Erny, Ashlee Lauren, Audrey
Kitching, Hanna Beth, Mitsuko, Andrea Krystine, Kolbi Jean, Stephanie
Greenquist, and Trystin. I chose these girls because they are all beautiful,
adorable, incredibly cool, but they all have their own unique look and a sort
of "suicide girl" edge. I love mixing cuteness with cool hair, piercings and
tattoos. So those are the types of girls I typically find to model for my
line.
What are they like to work with?
I loved working with each one of them. And I hope I do again many more
times.
When your company first started out and you saw someone wearing one of
your designs how did you feel?
My company is very new, I just launched the line at my fashion show party on
January 17th in Hollywood. A month later I debuted the line in the Charm
School Showroom in Vegas. So my lines only really been out for about 2
months, and when I see girls wearing my clothes, or writing about how much
they love it, ... its a great feeling.
Do you enjoy work?
I love doing this. Designing clothes and having my own clothing line has
always been my dream since I was a little girl. I love to create. I feel
really lucky that I get to do this as my job. It doesnt feel like work at
all.
Is it an everyday process, keeping your company going?
Its an every minute of every day process keeping the line going. If Im not
creating, Im promoting, or coming up with new ideas, or fulfilling orders,
or keeping track of expenses... I hardly sleep!
Have you studied fashion design at all?
Nope. Im self taught. I used to go to my grandmas house and sew with her
when I was a little girl. Shed help me make a skirt, or patch a pair of
jeans. I loved watching her work. When I was in highschool, there were so
many nights that I wouldnt sleep. Id get a random idea for a purse or a
skirt, and Id start cutting up my old bed sheets or my dads old ties, and Id
spend hours glueing them togethr into some random creation Id force myself
to wear the next day. Eventually I taught myself how to sew and now the
quality of my work is better.
Do you take anyone to model? Or do YOU pick them?
Im always looking for new models, but I definately have an idea of what Im
looking for. Though I encourage girls to send me their photos, or links to
their websites, cause they might be exactly what I had in mind. But I only
take girls who have actually had modeling experience. Its not as easy as it
might seem to get a good picture. Most of the girls I work with have spent
years working as models, and theyre great. But send me pictures and Ill let
you know!
