Interview
When did you first want to be a designer?
I started playing dress up basically at birth. I was always "different" with my style than other kids my age. The earliest memory I have of this was when I was in grade school. I had a pair of bellbottoms that I thought were to die for! Unfortunately for me it wasn't the 60's and therefore not the trend. Many years later bellbottoms were in, and I was onto something else ahead of the trend.
What's a highlight of your recent design career?
MTV is filming me right now for a documentary about my Fashion Week show and if it will be a successful turning point in my career. I think this whole MTV experience is really going to bring a lot of great attention to New York Couture.
Please tell us about your brand. What is the concept behind it?
New York Couture is meant to be fun!!! Fun clothes... for fun people.
Where do you go for inspiration?
Everything inspires me! My head is like a boiling pot of water with things just popping out. When I go out I like to see guys or girls (sometimes even guys dressed as girls...lol) all dressed up and I go home and dream of something fabulous. I'll wake up and not be able to function until I make the dream reality.
In the past, what was your favorite project and why?
I really enjoy taking apart wedding dresses! Adding some neon paint... making them very sexy and crazy to wear. I guess it's a hobby I have.
Is there a designer who inspires you?
Anyone who dares to take chances: John Galliano, Marjan Pejoski, Vivienne Westwood, and so many more. I do not try to emulate anyone... not because I do not admire anyone... but because I think wanting to be like someone else takes away from you being who you are meant to be. Individuality is what makes me feel special. There is no one exactly like me and there will never be anyone exactly like me.
What project you are working on right now?
We are working on the spring collection right now... and of course the Fashion Week Show & Party in NYC. LOTS of exciting things happening in the next month... and of course we always have more in the future!
Please tell us your favorite fashion moment of all time.
Every moment is my favorite. I live a very exciting and rare life... so everything that happens to something I take with me as a favorite.
Whose closet would you like to raid?
Marie Antionette. She was a real style icon in her time. If I could go back in time I would LOVE to see what she had in her closet!
Tell us about your next collection. Any future plans?
The next collection is very girly... lots of ruffles... lace... and we have a fun pair of overalls with chains. TONS of new styles! The future is filled with colors and dramatic garments. I'm at a point where I can really get the crazier ideas I have made for production... which means all my fans can enjoy the pieces I wear to parties and out.
What was your best experience in designing?
It's a good feeling the see people wearing your clothes out... it makes me feel like I gave that person something they could be excited about wearing. For example, I was at a Heatherette party and there was a girl there wearing something New York Couture... it felt really fabulous!
If you can travel anywhere in the world, where would you go?
I 100% plan to come to Japan! I want to shop... party... and sightsee! But for a more relaxing trip I would go to Costa Rica again. The country is packed with rainforests, cloud forests, beaches, volcanoes, and more! It's seriously such a breathtaking place to go to.
What do you see about Japan? (Culture, fashion, life styles etc..)
I think Japan is a style capital! The people are creating fashion movements and the world is taking notice! I can't wait to see it all for myself!
Tell us your secret favorite store.
I really like my friend Chantal's shop in Brooklyn. It's called Femme Fatale. She's always getting in really rare vintage pieces and she also carries my clothing line there. The coolest thing is she has a stripper pole in the store.... so cool!!
